GOD'S GREAT ADVENTURE

Game Design & Coding for Ages 12-16

Abiding Grace’s Summer Code Camp will introduce your student to programming basics using the Python programming language and concepts like loops, conditionals and functions, along with concepts like sprite rendering, collision detection and level design.

Students will apply what they’re learning by building their own video game on a Raspberry Pi computer while learning foundational Bible lessons!

— TWO CAMP OPTIONS —

CODE CAMP 101

Code Camp 101 is a great introduction to coding for students with a strong interest in computers, but little or no previous coding experience.

The students will be making a top-down adventure game, similar to Legend of Zelda or Chip's Challenge.

Students will not be expected to write code from scratch. In most cases they will be adding lines to an existing program or copying example code from the workbook. The goal  is to help them understand what the code does at each step, and gradually encourage them to experiment with making small changes to see the effect on the game.

CODE CAMP 201

Code Camp 201 is an intermediate-level camp, designed for returning campers or students with previous coding experience.

Students will be designing a 2D platformer game, similar to Super Mario World, Metroid or Commander Keen.

This camp will expect students to be more autonomous, writing snippets of code without help and adapting small examples to more complex situations.

OUR INSTRUCTORS

Pastor Benjamin Steenbock

Camp Administrator + 201 Instructor

Benjamin grew up near Seattle, WA and has a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from the University of Washington. In eight years of experience working at Microsoft in Xbox and Microsoft Games Studios, Benjamin served at various times as a tester and programmer, and ended his engineering career as a project manager. In 2009 Benjamin left the video games industry to pursue the pastoral ministry. Benjamin Steenbock has been serving as pastor at Abiding Grace Henry County since June 2015.

Peter Sahlstrom

101 Instructor

Peter learned to program when he was 10, and went on to get a Computer Engineering degree at Georgia Tech. He's worked with computers in lots of different environments: he's designed web pages, maintained servers, fabricated microchips, programmed small embedded microcontrollers, provided customer support to large companies, investigated and repaired defects in software, and now works as a Site Reliability Engineering manager. He's been the congregational president at Abiding Grace since 2014.
